There are many who have not agreed with me or my thoughts over the years. And that’s ok. Differences are what make the world go round. I am fairly generous with my joy and how/who I share it with. There are times, however, when the negativity of one can destroy the whole. You remember, “one bad apple can spoil the whole bunch” – well, it’s true.
I have had to, on occasion delete a friend or two from social networks where I hang out, as well as block folks who were never friends, merely acquaintances. Here’s the thing, I actually enjoy differences of opinion. I just have a hard time with negativity. When it becomes extreme, I have learned that I need to eliminate from my surroundings, from my life. I don’t talk or live that way, so I choose to not have it close to me, as well.
I know it is not easy to always be positive, trust me – I know this. But I also know when I am not feeling positive, I need to be around someone who is. And vice versa.
The power of self is strengthened by the power of others.
How we relate
How we treat, speak to, interact with others has a great deal to do with our own self-confidence. There is great power in relationship building or tearing down. “Use your power for good!” is comical cry based in truth – a truth I choose to follow.
My momma taught me that if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say nuthin’ at all. It was actually Thumper’s mother who said it, but my mother repeated it. Often.
And I thank her for that power she passed along to me. I don’t always use it for good, but I try. And I do not pursue or peruse negativity, on purpose.
Don’t Give Up
So I choose to not give up – even when poop is flung. And I choose to continue my growth, raising my own awareness, along with my standard. There is very little to be gained by standing still or falling back. Always move forward, always add to your fold. Progress.
On the wall of my office hangs a sign which states,
Work for a cause, not applause
Live life to express, not impress
Don’t strive to make your presence noticed,
Make your absence felt.
It’s ok to have reminders of what you want and what you don’t. Use the negativity of others as a reminder of what you don’t need or want in your work and life. And move forward.
That’s personal progress and therein lies personal power.
