Even in 2013 Job boards remain a leading candidate source for recruiters and even with the popularity of social media. Major job boards like CareerBuilder and Monster and job board aggregators like Simply Hired and Indeed  are some of the most popular ways for companies to develop a candidate pool when looking to fill an open position.

How does an employee candidate stand out from the virtual pack  of job hunters when posting a resume on a major job search board?

TIPS FOR JOB HUNTING ON CAREERBUILDER, MONSTER, ETC

  • Your Resume Title. First impressions are important and the title of your online resume will determine whether your resume gets a first look on the employment search engine. Include action words in the title that best describe your experience and are different from the norm. An example would be a Certified AMX Audio Visual Professional.
  • Include an Objective in Your Online & Resume Profile. An objective describes what career opportunity as well as industry you are interested in learning more about. Recruiters spend roughly 10 seconds or less per resume on the job boards. Keep your employment objective simple, direct and to the point. For example, Seasoned and Certified Human Resource Director interested in opportunity within the non-profit industry. Limit your objective to 1-2 sentences.
  • Resume Format. Include bullets, open space, dates, and quantitative numbers on your resume to help the job search engines index your resume in the right category. Avoid spelling errors, unprofessional email addresses, and a format that is not easily skimmed and no more than 2 pages.
  • Update Your Profile Weekly. Job boards list resumes by most recently updated and allow recruiters to use search by resumes updated daily, weekly, and monthly. Keep your resume at the top of the pack by updating it weekly. You can also take advantage of CareerBuilder’s advantage option which automatically provides you this service but at a fee.
  • Use Searchable Buzzwords & Keyword Terms. Recruiters resume mine for qualified employment candidates also by keyword search. Include terms relevant to the industry or job you are interested in. Include any specialized certifications and their abbreviations as well as other specific qualifications to increase your exposure.
  • Include Your Contact Information. Job recruiters do not have the time or patience to contact a candidate that uses an anonymous resume on a job search board. Increase your exposure odds by including your contact information, including email and phone numbers.

Successful Job Search

Job board candidate profiles as well as your LinkedIn professional profile need to be updated and managed on a regular basis.  Your job search isn’t an easy task.  It takes hard to work to manage, develop, and execute a successful job search campaign.

  1. Not shamelessly promoting anything. My book is advice for job seekers and just like I am okay with others posting on my blogs and websites, promoting their advice to job seekers, just like I do, you shouldn’t feel threatened by other peoples advice. Sorry you are not comfortable with other job search experts offering people help. #lame back at ya!

    1. Cori,

If you are linking to a book that is for sale on my professional blog where I make a living off of, you are promoting your wares. I’m not a fan of strictly promoting without giving something back to the community. If you would like to have your book, featured, promoted, or shared with blog readers on this site and my new blog for job seekers, http://www.secretsofthejobhunt.com, please visit my advertising page at https://workology.com/advertising. I’m happy to do this, but this blog and the properties here are my blog which I have worked for over 5 years doing.

I think you would feel the same way, if I went to your Facebook Fan Page and left a comment, encouraging your readers to purchase my own book on Amazon without adding value to the conversation.

  2. Okay, well I give plenty back to the community with my free blogs, free webinars and free speaking engagements. When people post irrelevant content on my blog, I delete, if it’s relevant to the topics, then anyone can promote what they want on my blog. I don’t feel threatened by anyone else who can offer great job search advice to job seekers. There’s plenty of business out there for everyone!

    Good Luck!!!

  3. Not to be confrontational, but isn’t this similar to how you left self-promting comments on a bunch of FourSquare places near your house a while back?

      1. oh please. i got here supporting friends and good folks through integrity and admitting when i was wrong. i have never came to someone’s blog and promoted my book or things on their site. i value information and integrity above all.

  4. Interesting…

It may just be me, but I think there’s a difference between relevance and appropriateness?

There is plenty of room in our space to do what we do. That said, marketing 101 that is applicable to so much of what we do is to “assess our audience.” What is right for you Cori, may not apply to everyone and you should be mindful of a) Jessica as your audience in this case, but also the many, many people that traffic her blog and the perception you are creating as someone who – rather than asking to partner or appropriately promote, are instead unapologetically stepping on toes by promoting your content on a highly trafficked blog that others pay for promotion on.

    Just something to think about…
